2 men were reportedly burnt to death in Akwa Ikot Effanga in
Akpabuyo LGA of Cross Rivers state on Sunday, July 3, 2016 for allegedly
being witches.
The story was shared on Facebook by a Leo Igwe, who posted the details of the event on his page. He wrote on his Facebook page:
“I just received the news that two alleged witches were burnt to death in Akpabuyo in Cross River state in Southern Nigeria. This tragic event too place on Sunday July 3 2016 According to a local source, an angry mob lynched the two men after a ‘native doctor’ declared that they were responsible for several deaths of young people in the village.
The native doctor is currently in police custody but according to my local contact person none of those who killed the alleged witches had been arrested.”
The victims have been identified as
Chief Bassey Effiom Ngwe and Mr Asuquo Effiong Etim. The report added
that Chief Ngwe’s house was looted by the mob, and that his son was in
hiding
